Louisville Parking Day

hmmbird Design participated in Louisville, Kentucky’s Park(ing) Day to help promote and recruit for Home of the Innocents Therapeutic loving Foster Care Program (TLC). The pop-up space was created with a chalk-drawn rug and suitcase chairs. Because many of the children in foster care come to temporary homes with their belongings in trash bags the suitcases represent a more substantial place to hold their possessions. hmmbird Design and some employees at TLC sat in the space and talked to the public about foster care.

All the materials used were either found or purchased at the thrift store. The fabrics used were old curtains, the legs were from broken chairs, and the cushions from a thrown-out couch. The chairs were sold after Park(ing) Day and the money was donated to Home of the Innocents.

"The mission of PARK(ing) Day is to call attention to the need for more urban open space, to generate critical debate around how public space is created and allocated, and to improve the quality of urban human habitat … at least until the meter runs out!" -- Park(ing) 502
